2000 Swartz Creek Cross Country Meet Summary

Swartz Creek cross country opened the Big 9 season at home with last years conference champs, Powers, and Beecher. As expected, Beecher was a nonfactor in the meet with only one runner. That left only Creek to challenge last year's Class B State Champs.
Great weather and some extra rest had the Dragons thinking about good times. As the runners hit the mile mark, everyone was on schedule with Nick and Eric leading the race. The rest of the varsity were running near each other right around six minutes.
We had talked about the second mile being a point of emphasis in this race, but most of the Dragons still ran considerably slower this mile after a faster start. That is of course expect Nick and Eric who followed two Powers runners the wrong way on their own course and managed to cut a substantial chunk of the second mile. By this time, with the outcome of the meet all but determined, the final mile would come down to pride.
The Dragons rebounded in that final mile to turn in eight season bests. Eric and Ryan Jory were able to cut around a minute off their times and several others weren't far off. In the end, Swartz Creek fell to Powers 21-40, while knocking off Beecher on forfeit. With one week until the next meet, the Dragons are looking forward to a week of workouts and rest to prepare for the showdown with Carman-Ainsworth and Grand Blanc.
