2000 Swartz Creek Cross Country Meet Summary

After a week of good training, the
Dragon boys were looking to steal a win or two
from Carman-Ainsworth and Grand Blanc. The guys were focused and
rested. To beat C-A we'd have to break up their pack of five and
to beat G-B it would take that and then some.
The team got out well, but were already behind at the mile. At
one point C-A had seven in front of our number three. It is a
three mile race, however, and Creek
was not out of it yet. As Eric helped Nick duke it out with Grand
Blanc at the front, two other sophomores were doing their part in
the pack as Ryan Jory and Ryan Green moved into position to
challenge C-A's pack during the second mile. Jon and Travis were
also running well, although behind the Ryans. First-timer Sheldon
Relerford was challenging Mike for the last varsity spot to
Jackson and Tommy and Justin were working together farther back
in the pack.
Although the times were looking good at two miles, the second
mile was still a trouble spot for many of the Dragons. This put
the team in a position to try to come from behind in the last
mile to catch C-A. Up front, Nick let two Grand Blanc runners
pull ahead and looked as if he had settled for third. Eric was
coming on strong as were the Ryans. Jon passed Travis who seemed
to be flat, and Mike continued to hold Sheldon at bay. C-A still
had five in front of our third and only a strong push near the
end would turn the score around.
In the end, the Cav's were just a little too much for the Dragons. Although we fell 25-30 and 22-39, every
runner on the team ran a season best. The team now looks to
Saturday and a big invitational in Jackson.
