2000 Swartz Creek Cross Country Meet Summary

Meet: Jackson Invitational
Weather: Warm,
partly sunny, humid, 70's
With a good showing on Wednesday,
the Creek boys were looking for more improvement at Jackson. This
would be the team's first exposure to big time competition. After
a long night of heavy rain, the Dragons figured that the weather
would be cool. Down south in Jackson that was not the case. With
high humidity and temperatures in the 70's, mother nature would
play a role.
The team was running on tired legs after Wednesday's meet and
Thursday's mini-workout. This, combined with the weather
conditions and the caliber of competition, proved to be too much
for the Creek. After getting out fairly well in the first mile,
the second mile was once again our undoing. Nick was the only one
to split under 6 minutes (running 5:12 and 11:02). The rest of
the team were visibly just hanging on.
More problems surfaced in the third mile. As Coach Murphy waited
at the finish line for the team, Eric was the first Dragon to
appear. As the rest of the team crossed the line it was clear
that Nick would not be finishing. Later coach would learn that
the hills in the third mile were not kind to the quad Nick had
been nursing all season. He was forced to drop from the race.
With a cool down under their belts and hotdogs and cookies down
the hatch, the team was in better spirits. The Division I boys
results never did get finished and the team finally decided to
head home and look toward the next Big 9 meet with Clio and
Kearsley coming up on Wednesday.
