The 2001 edition of the Dragon
Cross Country team opened the season in a familiar place, the
Cavalier Classic hosted by Carman-Ainsworth. Creek was looking to
improve on a poor showing last year. Although the team was a
little beat up, our training indicated that improvement would not
be a problem. The weather was also much more conducive to running
well.
The team was out well at the mile with Eric Huffman leading the
way, tucked in near the front. The senior contingent followed
with Travis, Jon, and Steve all near each other. Ryan Green was
tucked in with that group as well. Further back, it seemed that
Ryan Jory would probably need more time to get back into form
after mouth surgery. Newcomer Eric Strong seemed tired but happy
as he passed the mile in decent shape.
As is often the case, the second mile was where the action took
place. Unfortunately, Creek didn't fare well. Eric Huffman's
lower leg pain had returned and he seem to be gutting it out.
Travis suffered stomach cramps which took their toll. The rest of
the team seem a little tired from a hard week of training.
Although bothered by a nagging quad injury, Ryan Green continued
to move up, pushing just ahead of Jon by the two mile mark.
In the third mile we seemed to hold our positions. Steve Shaw was
able to move past Travis and break 20 minutes, completing his
first cross race and setting a PR in the process. That PR should
last more than a week or so (hopefully!). In the end, we met our
goals, finishing two places and a hundred points better than last
year. We managed to put a scare into Davison who finished just
ahead. Our 1-7 average was 1:10 better than 2000 and our 1-5 gap
1:12 better. Things seemed to be falling into place as we headed
into a week of training before heading to Corunna.
