| 9/8/01 | Corunna Invitational | Windy, Pt-Cloudy, Humid |
1-7 Average: 19:09, 1-5 Gap: 2:01
The Creek boys headed into the
second meet of the season in good spirits after a good week of
training. Things seemed to be coming together well. After a poor
performance last season at the Corunna Invitational, the team
challenged itself to do better this time.
The plan was to get out in good position and then really hammer
from mile one to two. The middle of the race was trouble at
Cavalier. The guys did get out well. Eric was out with the
leaders and seemed to be under control. The seniors were in a
nice pack around 5:40 while both Ryans were just off that pace.
The rookies all looked to be in good position as well. Now for
the second mile...
Once again, the second mile took its toll on the team. Eric was
still battling for the lead, but by two miles he had settled in
to fourth place where he would stay for the rest of the race.
Another junior, Ryan Green, used the second mile to move up with
the seniors. Travis and Jon were slowing, while Steve continued
to hang tough. Ryan Jory rounded out the top six looking far
better than a week ago.
In the third mile, most of the team maintained pace, although up
front Eric slowed slightly. In the last tenth, Green was able to
move past Shaw to take the second spot on the team for the second
straight meet. Travis and Jon followed close behind to round out
the scoring.
The final outcome of the race didnt turn out like we hoped.
Big 9 rivals Kearsley and Davison both finished just in front of
us. In addition, Carman-Ainsworth squeaked past Okemos to take
the meet. Although our times were far better than last season and
several Dragons collected some hardware, there was still a sense
of disappointment. Eric had run to win but come up short. The
second mile was still giving us problems. And, although they are
within reach, Kearsley and Davison slipped through our fingers
again. On the bright side, everyone improved over last week and
the veterans all ran better than a year ago. We're making
progress but still have work to do.
