In the wake of the terrible
events of Tuesday, September 11, the Dragons headed into the Big
9 season opener with mixed feelings. There are times when high
school sports seem insignificant. In addition, a hard workout on
Monday left the bodies in recovery longer than usual. But as they
say, the show must go on.
With Beecher out due to nonparticipation, the meet turned into a
Powers-Creek dual. The course at Mott Park GC left something to
be desired as well. The many turns, slants, and hills made for
tough running - not that cross is supposed to be easy.
The race began with Powers taking Creek out at a hard pace. In
front Eric chased Luke Walker through the mile in 5:24, Jon
seemed poised for a good race in our second spot, and Ryan Jory,
Travis, and Steve followed close behind to round out the top
five. Ryan Green struggled in our 6th spot, nursing a nagging
quad injury. Rookie Ben Sheppard was even up with Eric Strong,
battling for the 7th spot with Chris Eskew close behind. Powers
was in control at this point, and Creek looked solid but tired.
Once again, the second mile seemed to take its toll. Splits for
the Dragons were off our expectations. With the meet outcome
seemingly locked, the race had become a matter of pride. In the
third mile, our splits improved. Up front, Eric fought to hold
off Powers' number two, Jon continued on, looking strong, and
Jory, Shaw and Hansen followed in a tight pack. Ben continued to
look strong as did Eric Strong.
Coach and Tommy waited at the finish as runners came in. Eric
ended up in third, Jon 11th, and Steve, Jory, Travis followed in
13th-15th giving us a total of 45. While most of the team's
finish times were slower, Ben Sheppard managed to knock 30
seconds of his previous best. Both Jon and Ryan J. looked much
stronger while moving up in the line-up. After the race the mood
was somber.
Although we prepared for a tough, tired race, it is never fun to
race slow and be beaten so soundly. The Dragons will now look
toward continuing the training and focus on the next three meets,
which will fall within an eight day span.
