| 9/26/01 | Kearsley-Clio Double Dual | Overcast, cold, breezy |
1-7 Average: 18:37.4, 1-5 Gap: 1:31
After Delta's boost of
confidence and a renewed sense of focus, the Dragons headed into
this Big 9 double dual with something they had lacked all season:
the will to win. Although past races had not measured up to
training levels, the team seemed to understand that we were good
enough to challenge both Clio and Kearsley and more importantly,
we expected to beat them both.
As race time approached, the outcome was less certain. Steve was
nursing a very painful calf and the team seemed nervous. Still,
as the race began, the guys were determined to see it through.
Steve did give it a go, but only lasted a quarter mile. Although
upset over not being able to contribute in the race, he took up
postion along the line and help cheer the team onward.
As the runners approached the mile, Eric was beginning to take
control. Both Kearsley and Clio had runners challenging early,
but from here the winner was no longer in doubt. Surprisingly,
the other Red & White jerseys followed close behind the
leaders. Travis was challenging Kearsley's #2 and Jon, Green, and
Jory were moving up on Kearsley's pack. Clio had quickly become
an after thought, as Creek was challenging Kearsley for the
double win. Ben and Eric Strong began to battle for the 6th
position and both looked "strong". Tommy and Chris
seemed to be on pace to get their best times as well.
For the first time this season, something new happened in second
mile. We didn't slow down! It would in fact come down to the last
mile. Travis was battling four Hornets up near the front and Jon
and the Ryans were trying to make up ground to help out. In the
closing 600 meters, Kearsley finally pulled away from Travis, but
he still hung tough. Jon and the Ryan's did close in, but were
unable to catch the Hornets. Ben, Eric, Tommy and Chris all
finished hard as well in front of the home town crowd.
When it was all over, the team came away with a win over Clio
(the first dual win since the turn of the century) and a close
loss to Kearsley. More importantly, every single runner ran a
season best and six of the nine ran personal bests! Jon dropped
18 seconds, Travis 27, Green 2, and Ben, Eric and Chris all
dropped at least a minute. Our team is now faced with the new
challenge of improving on what is probably our best meet in two
years.
