| 9/29/01 | Midland Invitational | Sunny, Breezy, Mild |
1-7 Average: 18:42, 1-5 Gap: 2:34
Now that Creek had established
itself as a team that can win, it was time to find out if our
training had also instilled some consistency. Just like last
year, the Midland Invitational delivered perfect weather
conditions. There could be no excuses today.
The Dragons would race with out Steve for the second meet so the
team looked to other runners to step up again like Wednesday. In
the first mile of the race Eric settled into a battle with Byrne
of John Glen for first while the rest of the team seemed a little
off pace. Ryan Green was struggling early, bothered by a nagging
quad injury. Splits at the mile mark would show that we were, in
fact, running right on pace and Travis, Jon, and Jory did begin
to reel in the pack during the second mile.
As Eric crossed the two mile, Byrne was well ahead and an East
Lansing kid had passed him for the second spot. Earlier in the
season this would have been the end for Eric, but today he held
his position and pushed hard to move back into second. As the
runners approached the finish, Eric not only locked up second but
closed the gap on first place.
The other Dragons also stayed strong in the closing miles and
Travis worked his way into the top 30 near the finish. Ben
Sheppard and Eric Strong were both running PR pace as they
battled for our sixth position.
At the finish, the clock indicated that we were once again
turning in season best performances. Eric finally broke 17,
taking second in 16:56. Travis tied Wednesday's PR with 18:03.
Jon and Jory both set new PR's while Ben and Eric matched
Wednesday's runs as well. Ryan green managed to finish, but was
clearly in some pain.
The final standings showed Creek tied for 7th with Kearsley, but
the Hornets got the nod on the tie breaker. We had to settle for
8th, one place better than Clio.
In the JV race, Tommy tried to avoid a replay of last year by
starting a little more controlled. Chris wass faced with the
challenge of beating the time of a Flushing girl and boy did he
deliver. His 20:49 was good enough for a 46 second PR!
