| 10/5/01 | Greater Flint Area CC Championships | Cold, Rain, 49 |
1-7 Average: 18:47.7, 1-5 Gap: 1:47
Although the week started out
warm and beautiful, it ended wet and cold. The Dragons were able
to get two good workouts in before the weather turned and felt
ready to add to the momentum built over the past two weeks.
The week started with speed work, which we ran with Lake Fenton
at our track. It was Travis who lead the way as we seemed to out
last them in the 10x400 workout. Wednesday was a maintainence
workout in the park. Ben Sheppard had vanished into thin air for
this one and was temporarily demoted to JV for Greater Flint.
With everyone on the team in attendance, we headed to Byram Park
in the middle of scattered showers. With Steve out and Ben on JV,
Strong and Chris would be called upon to come through on Varsity
today, a challenge that each accepted willingly. As the race
began, the rain seemed to come down a little harder. The runners
sorted themselves out in the first mile with Eric tucked in with
the leaders. Travis, Jon, Jory and Green came through near each
other and seemed to be in good position. Strong and Chris were
near each other and seemed to be on their goal to break 20.
As usual, we were focused on running a good second mile, of which
half was through a beautiful wooded trail. As the race crossed
two miles, the leaders had spread out. Eric was still on pace,
running in the top ten. Green had closed the gap on Jon. We
looked solid but with so many runners, in two different
divisions, it was difficult to tell for sure how we'd score.
As the Dragons approached the finish line, the team displayed
another weapon they'd been hiding all season: a finishing kick!
Perhaps those sprints we'd done on the same site three weeks
before were being recalled. All the Creekers showed their guts in
the final 150 meters, fighting for every place they could. The
best example was Ryan Green who looked like a man running from a
bear!
In the end, Creek once again improved on the previous meet. Eric
scored a PR and first team honors with 7th place. Travis and
Green also improved their best times. And the rest of the team
were all just off their season bests on this difficult course.
Things were looking good. As a team we finished 4th in the large
division, defeating league rivals Kearsley, Clio, and Davison.
Not to be outdone, Tommy and Ben both turned in season best runs
in the JV race. Ben scored his first metal with a 12th place
finish and an 8 second PR of 19:34. The Dragons would now need to
put it all together at the final dual on Wednesday against
Davison and Flushing. In just two weeks we've gone from trying
not to be last in the league to trying to win 4th place outright.
